Car talk: Think of your drive to and from work as an extension of your workday
Ted O'Malley spends about 12 hours in his car each week driving back and forth to work. O'Malley, a 34-year-old technical writer, lives in Evanston, Ill., and works out of three offices each week. On Mondays and Tuesdays, he drives to Milwaukee, a 160-mile round trip. On Wednesdays and Fridays, it's a 50-mile round trip to Oak Brook, Ill., and on Thursdays, he makes an 80-mile round trip to Naperville, Ill. The in-house visits are necessary, O'Malley says, because he's working on a project that involves input from different teams on highly specialized content.
The project, which was scheduled to last two years, ends in June. O'Malley figures that by then he'll have added more than 53,000 miles to his 2013 Ford Escape for work-related commuting. "I know there are people who drive one or two hours every day to work, but I spent the first 10 years of my career working 10 minutes from my house, so I don't think I'll ever get used to it," says O'Malley. What he has done, though, is learn to use his time more effectively.
